Brandenburg Textile Museum Forst

The museum, which opened in 1995, has been temporarily closed since the beginning of 2021. The reason for this is a comprehensive renovation and expansion. From 2026, a new exhibition concept will embed the museum in the social, economic, cultural and ecological contexts of textile production. The new permanent exhibition will be greatly expanded and will also present the regional history of East Lusatia and the history of the town of Forst, including the topic of “coal” - the curse and blessing of Lusatia. A special highlight in future will be the new locomotive hall for the “Schwarze Jule” - the last surviving locomotive of the Forster city railroad from 1893, which will be on permanent loan from the Dresden Transport Museum.

The Archive of Vanished Places (AvO), a unique place of remembrance in the German coal industry landscape, will also be located in the new museum in future. The challenge is to preserve a living culture of remembrance of the 137 places in Lusatia affected by open-cast mining in the new context.
