The Lausitz Cultural Castle - Film Museum

The Lausitz Cultural Castle is a vibrant place for education, reflection and dialogue dedicated to European film history and housed in a castle that has been undergoing renovation since 2020 thanks to the efforts of an association. Here, cultural heritage is researched, collected, preserved and made accessible to all through a variety of exhibitions, educational programmes and social projects. A small cinema also offers the opportunity to experience film art first-hand.

The centre is named after the actress Romy Schneider, who was one of the few filmmakers of her generation to actively engage with the period from 1933 to 1945, thereby stimulating an important public debate about history.

The Kulturschloss focuses on reappraising the biographies of forgotten cultural figures. It actively opposes historical revisionism and strengthens democratic values by promoting a critical awareness of the past.

A special section of the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the 1932 Ufa film ‘Strich durch die Rechnung’ (A Spanner in the Works). The comedy was shot in the Lusatian town of Forst, which was a significant event for the region at the time. Stars such as Heinz Rühmann, Käthe von Nagy and Otto Wallburg appeared in the film. It is an important testimony to early film production and its connection to Lusatia.
