Babelsberg Castle SPSG Potsdam

Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (later Emperor Wilhelm I.) and his wife Princess Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach had the castle and the park erected as a summer residence in 1833. After construction of the first castle by Karl Friedrich Schinkel from 1833 to 1835, the architects Ludwig Persius and Johann Heinrich Strack expanded the fortress-like structure from 1844 to 1849. The highlight of the social and political life in Babelsberg Castle was the Proclamation of the German Empire in 1871. The surrounding park with a view of the Havel river was designed by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau.
